Sonakshi, 29, is at the top of her game as she fights for what is right. Her nemesis range from college bullies, to local goon and a corrupt policeman, played by Anurag Kashyap (surprise! surprise!).

Sonakshi plays Akira Sharma who has moved to Mumbai from Jodhpur for her studies. She is defiant and strong and will not bend before anything that’s wrong. She’s stubborn and will reach the truth at any cost. She is not to be messed with, as Anurag realizes a little late.

Akira is directed by A R Murugadoss, who has previously worked with Sonakshi in Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

The film’s poster features Sonakshi with a scar near her right eye. “In life, every scar that occurs on our body has a story behind it. Similarly, Akira has a past wound that has dried up and remains a scar now. The moment we see her face we should come to know that she has had a painful past. That’s why I created the scar under her eyes,” Murugadoss said in a statement.

Sonakshi is said to have performed high-octane action scenes for the film, which is the remake of Tamil film Mouna Guru.

Her character hails from Jodhpur and she arrives in Mumbai for education and with hopes to erase the scars of an unsettling childhood. But unknown to her, Akira finds herself in the middle of a crime.

Suddenly, she stands to lose everything – her family, her friends, even her own sense of identity – as she becomes the hunted. Now she has only herself to trust, and she needs to find the strength within her to stand up for what is right and prove her own innocence and attain justice.

Produced by Fox Star Studios, the film releases on September 2.

Akira is an action film directed by A R Murugadoss. “I felt that I could pull off or carry it off and also look convincing while doing this action,” Sonakshi, who will perform high octane martial arts stunts in the film, told news agency IANS in an interview.

Akira, releasing on September 2, is also Murugadoss and Sonakshi’s second collaboration after Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty, co-starring Akshay Kumar.

After Akira, Sonakshi Sinha, 29, will be seen in Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Force 2 also starring John Abraham and Tahir Raj Bhasin. Action genre aside, Sonakshi has also signed up for Sunhil Sippy’s Noor, based on Saba Imtiaz’s 2014 crime novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me!.

Sonakshi was doing a question and answer session with her fans on Twitter on Saturday where she was asked whether her best friends are men or women.

This is how the 28-year-old replied:

She further shared that she likes to be with her best friends whenever she feels low as they “automatically make me feel better”.

Sonakshi, who turns 29 on June 2, said that she has a special surprise coming up for her fans on her birthday.

The Lootera star, who also has Abhinay Deo’s Force 2 up her sleeve, tweeted an update on the biopic, which is based on the life of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar.

Sonakshi, who is playing the titular character in the Apoorva Lakhia-directed movie, wrote:

Just an update on Haseena, am trying to workout the dates. This film is very special to me and im trying my best to clear the date clash.

Rumours were doing the rounds that the biopic is facing production issues with a producer and financier yet to come on board.

The film will track 40 years of Haseena’s life and is said to be an emotional saga of a woman. It will also depict what it meant to be Dawood Ibrahim’s sister.

Haseena Parkar, the elder sister of Dawood, died in July in 2015. She shot to fame after some rival gangsters led by Arun Gawli gunned down her husband Ismail Parkar in a gang war in 1991, which led to a spate of brutal retaliatory killings from the Dawood’s gang at that time.

Haseena was reportedly, acting as the don’s Mumbai business head. Though officially she was not directly implicated in any underworld activities, it is believed that she has strong holds in parts of south Mumbai.

The 28-year-old Dabangg star, however, expressed her desire to do a musical concert in future. “I have not thought about Bollywood playback singing yet. I am happy with live performances at the moment. I would love to do a concert someday,” Sonakshi told PTI.

She has now joined the league of Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor, who have taken to singing professionally.

Sonakshi, who is mentoring singing reality show Indian Idol Junior, will be next seen in AR Murugadoss’ film Akira. The actress-director duo had earlier worked in Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty, also starring Akshay Kumar.
