Loud cheers from different quarters welcomed the striking down of triple talaq by a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court. The bench termed the practice unconstitutional and illegal, putting a stay on it for six months, and directed the Parliament to bring legislation within that time. While it gave those who had been fighting against the controversial practice a reason to celebrate, Shabana Azmi, who has spoken against triple talaq as “patently unjust” for a long time, has a more subdued response. The actress “welcomes” the Supreme Court judgment, but wishes it were permanent.
