Vijender Singh Beniwal (born 29 October 1985), also known as Vijender Singh or Vijender Beniwal, is an Indian Professional Boxer and former Amateur boxer from Kaluwas, Bhiwani district in Haryana.
He was educated in his village, after which he received a bachelor’s degree from a local college in Bhiwani.
He practised boxing at the Bhiwani Boxing Club where coach Jagdish Singh recognised his talent and encouraged him to take to professional boxing.
He was coached by the Indian Boxing Coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu.
He won medals in different competitions at the national level.
In 2000, Vijender won his first gold medal at the National Games. Three years later, he became India’s Youth Boxing Champion.
In 2003, Vijender, a 17-year-old, took part in the Afro-Asian Games as a senior boxer. He fought against very experienced boxers and clinched the silver medal.
Vijender had also taken part in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics in the welterweight division and lost to Turkey’s Mustafa Karagollu by 20-25.
In the year 2006 Commonwealth Games, Vijender won the semi-final against England’s Neil Perkins but lost the final against South Africa’s Bongani Mwelase.
At the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, Vijender won the bronze medal by beating Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora by 9-4.
In July 2009, Vijender Singh was given the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India’s highest sporting honour.
On October 10 this year, Vijender won his first professional boxing match against British boxer, Sonny Whiting, knocking him out within Round 3 at the Manchester Arena.
