Today’s Big Releases: Airlift, Joy

Actor Akshay Kumar arrives with a patriotic message for audiences with his film Airlift up for release today. Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, the film is based on the evacuation of Indians from Kuwait in 1990. Akshay plays an influential businessman. Nimrat Kaur plays his wife.

The film is the third of Akshay’s films with a patriotic theme after 2014′s Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and Baby which released in 2015.

Also up for release is the slapstick comedy Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 starring Tusshar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani, Mandana Karimi and Claudia Ciesla.

Hollywood has a string of films to offer including David O Russell’s Oscar-nominated Joy and Jake Blakeson’s The 5th Wave. Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper, revolves around a self-made woman’s rise to the top in the ruthless world of business.

Airlift Script ‘Shocked’ Akshay Kumar. Here’s Why

At a time when actors are going out of their way to gain or lose weight for a particular role in showbiz, superstar Akshay Kumar said he does not believe in drastic body makeovers for a film.

Akshay, 48, said that he has never been in the race to have a certain body type.

“I lead a very healthy lifestyle and I don’t believe in drastic body makeovers for film roles. I shoot back-to-back and if I start following a certain diet or exercise then it would take a toll on my health. I always leave the margin of 6 kilos more or less,” he told PTI.

Akshay will next be seen in Raja Krishna Menon’s Airlift, which is based on the story of evacuation of Indians from Kuwait during the Iraq-Kuwait war.

“I was not aware about this issue at all. I had no knowledge about it. I was shocked when I read and heard the script of Airlift from my director,” he said.

The Baby star said that the script of the film is powerful and he has full faith in Mr Menon, who is returning to direction after a gap of six years.

“When a script is powerful, then a director automatically gets the confidence. I have worked with 18-19 new directors in the film industry. Some made it and some didn’t. I believe in the script,” he said. (Also Read: Akshay Kumar Explains Why Airlift is Not a ‘Commercial’ Film)

Making a film on the world’s biggest civil evacuation was not an easy task for Mr Menon and the director said he made the movie because he wanted to celebrate the achievement of Indians.

“When I realised 1,70,000 people were brought back to India on commercial aircrafts, I felt it was a huge achievement and we should celebrate this. Making people aware of it is actually celebrating the issue. When I read about it, I felt proud to be a part of India that would do this,” he added.

Airlift, which releases on January 22, also stars Nimrat Kaur.

Akshay Kumar Keen to do a Women-Centric Film With Nimrat Kaur

Actor Akshay Kumar said that he is keen to star in a woman-centric film with his Airlift co-star Nimrat Kaur.

Women-centric films in Bollywood usually have top actress while the male lead is played by newcomers or relatively lesser known faces.

“I just remembered that there is one script, I wanted to make it, it’s a woman (related) thing. I was just looking at her (Nimrat) and I thought ‘I have to ask her about this’,” Akshay said in an interview.

The Baby actor feels it all boils down to the content and is not about male or female-centric roles.

“I did a film called Aitraaz, it was a film which belonged to Kareena and Priyanka. A film has to be a hit, has to be appreciated, it doesn’t matter how much is my role,” said Akshay. (Also Read: Akshay Kumar Explains Why Airlift is Not a ‘Commercial’ Film)

Nimrat feels there is no “pre-convinced” notion among male actors to not be a part of women-centric films.

“When it’s women-centric, if you need a superstar to star for commercial reasons, they will join in. In the same way, if in a male-centric film you need the presence of a female superstar that also happens. I don’t think people have a pre-conceived notion that if it’s a women-centric film, then we will not do it,” she said.

First look: Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur, the regal couple of Airlift

The first look of Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur starrer Airlift presents the duo in a regal avatar. The movie presents Nimrat in an avatar completely opposite of what we have seen so far- all scarlet and satin.

Akshay reportedly plays owner of a business conglomerate and Nimrat plays his wife, hence the royal and opulent look.

The plot of the movie reportedly traces the life of a Kuwaiti businessman of Indian origin, who helped the government in the the evacuation of Indians trapped in the Gulf-nation during the war in the early 90s.

BAFTA night leaves Nimrat Kaur bewitched and bedazzled

Actress Nimrat Kaur’s debut movie The Lunchbox may have missed its chance to grab a BAFTA trophy, but its ceremony left her bewitched.

Just after recovering from a mesmerising night the bedazzled actress took to witter to share her excitement.

“At the unforgettable @BAFTA do last night…So surreal to be there and present as well! #Baftas2015 #EEBAFTAs,” she tweeted.

The Lunchbox was nominated in the Film Not in the English Language category and lost the trophy to Polish-Danish drama movie Ida. Nimrat attended the event to support her movie.
