Separated by just a month, two films set in Bengal and about Bengalis are on offer from Bollywood. As April began, Dibakar Banerjee brought a Bengali sleuth and colonial Calcutta to national attention in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Tomorrow arrives Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, the story of a hypochondriac father and his long suffering daughter.

Set several decades apart, Piku and Byomkesh nevertheless inhabit similar worlds which orbit around the central notion of Bengaliness. Importantly, this is not Bollywood’s notion of Bengaliness but an insider’s view of a culture and a people. Both Dibakar and Shoojit are true-blue Bengali bhadralok – the first a ‘probashi’ from Delhi, the second a Barrackpore boy who has already once offered Bollywood a window into the Bengali soul with Vicky Donor.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Review: Your Verdict

Director Dibakar Banerjee recreates 1943 Calcutta for the big screen in period thriller Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! , starring actor Sushant Singh Rajput as the titular private eye on his first case. The film is the first Bollywood version of Bengali author Saradindu Bandopadhyay’s sleuth series.

Film critic Saibal Chatterjee writes in his 3.5 stars rated review for NDTV: “In the manner in which it is structured and paced, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! breaks most of the boundaries of the genre as we know it in India. No matter what quibbles we might have about its two-and-a-half-hour runtime and somewhat ponderous nature, there can be no denying that this thriller bears the signature of a remarkable craftsman. The narrative, unlike the style of average Bollywood genre flicks, is nuanced and demands unwavering attention from the audience.”

‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’, directed by Dibakar Banerjee, will see Sushant Singh Rajput play a never-seen-before character on the silverscreen!

The first quarter of the year 2015 hasn’t impressed the Box Office much, and hence it would be interesting to see if Sushant manages to pull off a surprise with ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Climax and Villain Video Leaked?

Panic gripped the makers of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! on Tuesday evening when they were informed about the film’s climax and identity of the villain being leaked online.

A source says, “Director Dibakar Banerjee was in Yash Raj studios giving interviews to digital media, when a journalist asked him about this. The colour drained from Dibakar’s face immediately. He then asked for a member of his team to be called in.”

Dibakar Banerjee then finished the interviews and politely asked the other journalists to wait as he paced up towards the lift to meet YRF boss Aditya Chopra.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Get a taste of 1940s in Calcutta Kiss

The makers of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy have released the video of night club number Calcutta kiss featuring Lauren Gottlieb.

Sung by Imaad Shah and Saba Azad, Calcutta Kiss is a thoroughly peppy, foot-tapping number. And, if our predictions turn out true, might soon earn a rank in the party songs this year.

The film’s team had earlier launched Calcutta kiss on Kolkata’s iconic Howrah Bridge, where 50 dancers had done a flashmob.

International dancer Lauren Gottlieb is seen jiving on the song with four men, wearing the masks of detective character Byomkesh Bakshy.

It is Sushant Singh Rajput’s 29th birthday and the makers of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy have given a gift to him and his fans by releasing the trailer of the anticipated crime thriller today.

We must say the trailer is quite intresting and will leave you asking for more. The film is set in war torn Calcutta during the 1940s and its follows the first adventure of Byomkesh Bakshy.

In the trailer, Byomkesh Bakshy, played by Sushant Singh Rajput, takes his first case in which he has to find a missing man. Byomkesh is convinced that the man is not missing but is dead.

Bollywood fans have a reason to rejoice as Detective Byomkesh Bakshy aka Sushant Singh Rajput will greet them a week before the initial release date. The release date of Dibakar Banerjee’s crime thriller Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! has been preponed and the film will now hit the theatres on April 3.

The film, based on the detective character Byomkesh Bakshi created by Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, was previously slated to release on April 10.

The intriguing trailer of the film was released two months ago and it did make many heads turn. The film is set in war torn Calcutta during the 1940s and its follows the first adventure of Byomkesh Bakshy.
