SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali has become the first south Indian film to collect a whopping Rs 300 crores in just nine days, confirmed a trade analyst. It has surpassed the previous record held by superstar Rajinikanth’s Enthiran, which had collected approximately Rs 290 crores at the box office.

“As of Saturday, the film has grossed Rs 303 crore worldwide,” trade analyst Trinath told IANS.

“The Hindi version of the film has netted over Rs 50 crores, setting a new record for a dubbed film. Despite the onslaught of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the numbers of Baahubali have not been affected,” he said.

A mythological drama about two brothers at war for a kingdom, the film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles.

The second part in the Rs 250-crore franchise is slated for release next year.

“We don’t think we can make such collections right now until we are proved wrong. Of course, these numbers of the film do scare you. Baahubali is a damn good film but Bollywood also needs to get those numbers,” said Salman.

The Kick star was the right person to answer this question as several of his films have fared much above 100 crores at the box office.

Baahubali has earned Rs 150 crore at the box office over its opening weekend itself. The multi-lingual drama is now inching towards the Rs 300 crore-mark.

Not only did SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali break numerous box-office records but the film also broke several technological boundaries.

The film’s editor and DOP KK Senthil Kumar spent hundreds of man hours for post-production, over a period of 24 months. The film makers’ DI (digital intermediate) partner Annapurna delivered the first ever DI process attempted in India in the scale of Hollywood films.

“It was a pioneering effort,” CV Rao, Head of DI at Annapurna Studios said. “For the first time in India, we had implemented ACES work flow. We had started this project two years ago and did several researches on workflows before locking on ACES. It gives lots of freedom and controls for VFX artist to play around within the footage.”

Explaining about the role of DI, Mr Rao said it is all about shooting digitally and getting that content into editing, color, VFX and audio in the most efficient way.

“To begin with, all live shots initially reach the DI suit. We then check them thoroughly with brightness and contrast levels and thereafter deliver the right formats to VFX team. Later the final edited picture along with VFX shots are blended together to enhance the look and mood of the film. To meet the film maker’s expectations, we brought in completely new Baselight systems dedicated to the Baahubali project,” he said.

“Baahubali is a heavy visual effects production and that made the challenge for DI team even more intense and we are glad that we could complement the film’s theatrical and storytelling experience,” he added.

From the reviews the film has been receiving, looks like all the hard work paid off!

An epic battle movie, likened to American blockbuster 300, is set to become India’s most expensive film ever, but it’s not Bollywood that will smash the record.

The two-part Baahubali, costing still a fraction of the budget of Hollywood blockbusters, has been made in the Telugu and Tamil languages and releases today. It’s also been dubbed into Hindi and other languages.

Its release shines a welcome spotlight on southern India’s film industries, which are often overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of the internationally-bankable Hindi-language Bollywood films.

Director SS Rajamouli told news agency AFP that the movie, which eager cinema-goers are also comparing toHercules, will break the previous big-budget Indian film by a whopping $17 million. “The budget will definitely be over 250 crore rupees ($40 million) for both parts,” Mr Rajamouli told AFP.

Baahubali, literally meaning The One With Strong Arms in English, is laden with special effects and tells the fictional story of two warring brothers battling for control of an ancient Indian kingdom.

Part two of the ambitious spectacle is scheduled to hit screens next year.

Indian cinema produces films in 39 languages and dialects. Last year, 216 Hindi or Bollywood movies were released, fewer than the 287 in Tamil and 255 Telugu-language films.

Bollywood is India’s biggest-grossing movie industry, accounting for $565 million in box office revenues in 2013 according to Deloitte. But the Telugu and Tamil industries were not far behind, raising a total of $468 million, and despite their relative anonymity abroad have form when it comes to releasing big-budget blockbusters.

Baahubali overtakes Rajinikanth’s 2010 Tamil movie Enthiran (Robot), which cost an estimated Rs 1.5 billion ($23 million) to make, as Indian cinema’s most costly film so far.

Movie critics and fans, who have watched the trailer and songs released over the last month, say its vast battle scenes draw comparisons with 2006 hit movie 300, which starred Gerard Butler.

“It’s the simple story of a father who has been back-stabbed, a mother who has been enchained for no wrong of hers and the story of a son who takes revenge. The two parts span two generations,” explained Mr Rajamouli to AFP.
