Films with a physically challenged lead are hard to find in Bollywood. In Margarita, With a Straw, we have one which is rarer because it centres on a female protagonist. It’s a much-welcomed move which has its share of touching moments but is far from perfect.
Laila (Kalki Koechlin) may be confined to the motorised wheelchair but that doesn’t stop her from living life to the fullest. She explores sex by visiting porn sites and fool around with a friend, writes lyrics for a rock band, and likes its cute Assamese lead singer, in the hope that they can be a couple someday. But once she is spurned in love, Laila’s way of mending her broken heart is by heading to New York to study creative writing. In case you are wondering how is a middle-class girl from Delhi affording education and stay abroad, well Laila had applied to many universities and quickly got a scholarship to NYU.
